Position Overview 

The Director of Operations provides leadership for Promise Schools' central organization and network schools in the following areas: compliance, purchasing/procurement, vendor management, board management, support, and school operations (facilities, food service, security, and front office operations).  

This position requires an organized professional with the ability to juggle multiple projects, skills to ensure thoroughness and accuracy, and the capacity to build systematic processes for a changing organization. This position reports to the CEO.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Documents school and network operational processes and procedures and ensures that PS network staff and school staff are trained to perform these activities.

  1. Oversee the following network and school level operational tasks

    • Training on operational processes and procedures

    • Regular reporting to CEO on state of network and school operations

    • Submission of compliance reports and requirements on behalf of the network

    • Develops and manages a Master Calendar to ensure that all school compliance activities are completed in a timely manner and ensures that school staff is trained appropriately to complete the activities.

    • Coordination with the Finance Organization on network purchasing and procurement (quotes, competitive bidding)

    • Vendor management, including the generation of vendor contracts and regular performance reviews to ensure vendors are providing an adequate service level

    • Lead in preparation for quarterly board meetings and additional board meetings, as needed

    • Conduct board management and support.

  1. Directly manages the Operations staff members at the PS campus schools and ensures oversight of the following operational tasks:

  • Compliance and Reporting

    • Responsible for all compliance and reporting activities, including those required by the school’s authorizer, MDE, and other grant agreements.  

    • Ensures that all student files and enrollment applications are thorough.

    • Ensures that school staff and/or vendors manage special education and national lunch program compliance reporting.

    • Ensures that Board policies are implemented.

  • Procurement and Vendor Management

    • Manages relationships with vendors, including annual performance reviews.

    • Initiates and manages contracts; monitors performance and manages issues raised by vendors and school teams.

    • Manages competitive bidding processes where applicable.

  • Facilities

    • Oversees Facilities Manager and maintains close relationships with building landlords and vendors to ensure that the physical facility and infrastructure support the needs of the school program. 

    • Provides feedback on facilities vendor performance.

    • Oversees space planning and assignment to ensure available space for current year activities as well as the next school year.

  • Food Service: Manages the school lunch program or vendor-managed program in partnership with the business office, including processing lunch status forms and the competitive bidding process.

  • Safety and Security: Provides support to ensure that the School Emergency Management Plan is implemented and that drills are conducted to ensure that all in the school are prepared for emergency situations.

  • Front Office

    • Establishes front office systems to ensure a high functioning, professional, and visitor-friendly environment.

    • Ensures that office copiers and printers are functional and meet the needs of the school team

    • Support PowerSchool as needed.

  1. Meets regularly with the Promise Schools network team to discuss the status of network and school operations and propose solutions for challenges at hand.

  1. Provide general assistance to the CEO with projects as directed.

  1. Act as a team player who provides colleagues, families, teachers, and students with first-class service.  

  1. All other duties as assigned



  • Bachelor’s Degree required. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Experience in charter school operations is strongly preferred.

  • Minimum of three years’ work experience.

  • Self-motivated and directed.  Ability to take the initiative with projects;

  • Experience working in a team-oriented, collaborative environment;

  • Willingness to “roll up your sleeves” to support work in a dynamic, start-up environment and develop new areas of expertise to support school operational needs;

  • Experience managing contracts and vendor relationships are strongly preferred.

  • Experience with PowerSchool preferred.
